Coping with Suicidal Thoughts

Suicidal thoughts also referred to as suicidal ideations are significantly higher now than pre-pandemic times according to Stats Canada. According to the Canadian Government, 12 people die from suicide every day in Canada, more than 200 people will attempt suicide, and many more experiences thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts. There are many resources out there, this article is designed for adults experiencing suicidal thoughts, if you are looking for support with children/teen with suicidal thoughts please refer to this article. Please find a few key things to consider below:

  1. Assessing Risk. There are many ways of assessing risk, a place to start is with this resource from SAFE-T. If you are in immediate danger or believed to be at risk it is important to go to your nearest emergency department or call 911, so they can assess the severity of the situation.
  2. Know the Resources. Talk Suicide Canada is for support of you or someone you know who is thinking about suicide available 24/7 by phone 1-833-456-4566, available 4pm to 12am by text 45645. There are also local distress lines available in each region for age 16 and up. The two for Durham Region including Durham Centre Distress available 24/7 by phone 905-430-2522 or 2pm to 2am by text 258258, and Durham Mental Health Services (DMHS) at 905-666-0483.
  3. Develop a Safety Plan. Safety plan is key element to complete with any level of suicidal ideation. It is important to be aware of what is triggering the suicidal thoughts, what you can do to support yourself, what supports you can reach out to and 1-2 things to look forward to in the near and far futre. Here is a handout of a safety plan.
  4. Build a Support Network. Having a support network is key to recovery. Consider family and friends who you trust, can rely on, and you feel supported by. Part of your support network may also include a helping professional including Psychotherapist, Counsellor, Psychologist or Social Worker depending on the severity of your suicidal thoughts; and Psychology Today can be a great resource to find local supports. Most people benefit from some kind of professional support when struggling with suicidal ideations. Ensure you find the best fit for you.
