Supporting Your Teen to Cope with Suicidal Thoughts

Suicide is a prevalent issue with teens, Stats Canada reports more than 1 in 5 teens have suicidal thoughts. Many parents are shocked when they find out their teen is struggling, and it can be difficult to know what to do next. There are many resources out there, I have included some key resources below that I find helpful in supporting teens struggling with suicidal thoughts.

  1. Get support. If your teen is in immediate danger or believed to be at risk it is important to go to your nearest emergency department or call 911, so they can assess the severity of the situation. If your teen is not in immediate danger, allow your teen to share about what is happening for them. Listening and providing a non-judgmental space for your teen to share is essential. It is important your teen does not feel alone, and knows you are their to support them.
  2. Find resources in your area. The Kids Help Phone 1-800-668-6868 is an excellent resource with trained counsellors available 24/7 via phone or text, they provide support to youth up to age 25 and can provide support to parents on behalf of their teen. For older teens attending post-secondary there is Good2Talk. There are also local distress lines available in each region for age 16 and up. The one for Durham Region is Durham Mental Health Services (DMHS) at 905-666-0483.
  3. Develop a safety plan. Safety plan is key for your teen to develop as it helps them to be aware of what is triggering the suicidal thoughts, what they can do to support themselves, what supports they can reach out to and one of the key factors in prevention is things to look forward to in the near and far future. Here is a handout of a safety plan.
  4. Get Help. Find a counsellor or a therapist that meets the needs of your teen and is a good fit.
  5. Keep the lines of communication open. It is important to have regular check-ins with your teen to allow opportunity for them to identify and share about what they are feeling. Collaboratively decide with your teen the frequency and try to have a consistent time, it would be recommended bigger talks once a week and brief daily check-ins.
Over the years I have helped many teens overcome their suicidal thoughts, I would be happy to set up an initial consult to see if I am a good fit for your teen. You can book an initial consult directly though  https://oab.owlpractice.ca/mindfulhealingjourney/booking

I have been working with parents for over 10 years. I have learned a great deal from them as well as from parenting my own children. It has taught me that parenting is the most trying job there is, requires the support of a village, and with the right supports can be truly rewarding.
