Why Yoga Nidra? – Part 1 of 2

​Yoga nidra promotes a deep state of relaxation which can help in restoring the body to a state of balance and calm. Many people are curious how this works and how is it different from other forms of meditation. The Yoga Journal explains how the process of yoga nidra shifts us through the various brain waves of beta, alpha, theta, and delta, which is essentially “powering down” our brain activity, and allowing us to slow our thoughts and restore ourselves. Yoga nidra is a form of meditation, however it is different than listening to a guided meditation as it is a different level of body awareness that slows the mind.   1. Reduces Anxiety. Yoga Journal explains how yoga nidra is an antidote to stress. In my own experience and in clients I work with, when we are anxious, we are typically too much in our heads and not enough in our bodies. When we can get more into our bodies, we allow ourselves to reach a greater state of balance between mind and body, and we will in turn reduce our anxiety.
  2. Alleviates Stress. Yoga nidra promotes relaxation and stress reduction. It allows up to truly slow down and be with ourselves.
  3. Better Sleep. Yoga nidra also known as yogic sleep as state between sleep and waking. While yoga nidra is not a substitute for sleep, research has shown that 45 minutes of yogic sleep feels like 3 hours of regular sleep.
  4. Increased Wellbeing. A study from the National Library of Medicine found that yoga nidra improved the wellbeing in youth in numerous ways including: increased feelings of happiness, enthusiasm, quietude, being more inspired and alert, more active, having clarity of thought, better control over anger, and improved self-confidence.
