Relief from Insomnia

​Tired of sleepless nights? Are you your own worst enemy when it comes to sleep? Do you want to have a better night of sleep? Insomnia has many far reaching impacts aside from the frustration of not being able to sleep to the headaches, irritability, muscle aches, or low patience for partners or kids behaviour. Find below some tips to try to find relief from insomnia:

  1. Examine Your Habits. Some people may have been struggling with insomnia for year and others more recently. In either scenario it can be helpful to examine your routine and patterns before bed, and start to make adjustments. Simple adjustments may include reducing screen time one hour before bed. The CDC has some accessible tips to get started.
  2. Have an Outlet. If you are overthinking before bed, going over the “to do list” for the next day or are waken up at 3am with racing thoughts, try to have an outlet before sleep. This may include journaling or talking things out with someone you trust on a regular basis.
  3. Engage the Body During the Day. It is important for us to practice being more in the body and less in the mind. For some this may include physical activity and being fully present with the body during the process. For others it may be regular yoga practice, daily guided meditations, or being in a present and meditative state while being active with your kids.
  4. Sleep Meditation. There are various sleep meditations out there, some more helpful than others. There is a specific meditation for sleep involving yoga nidra that can be particularly helpful to drop into delta brain waves which are the same brain waves of sleep.   5. Modifications as Needed. As time goes on some modifications may be needed as our bodies are continuously changing. Trust your intuition and make meaningful changes.
