Holistic Options for Supporting Mental Health

Building on last weeks post. I wanted to delve a bit deeper into the alternative and holistic  options to supporting mental health. A combined and collaborative method of support usually yields the most effective results. Below are some of the holistic approaches to consider:

  1. Naturopathy. With wellbeing concerns including physical aliments and mental health difficulties, naturopathy can be a great part of someone’s care team to get them feeling better and living life to the fullest. For example if a child is iron deficient according to the National Library of Medicine they can experience increased levels of anxiety and depression. A naturopath would be able to help support improving iron levels, and look at all aspects that could potentially improve the wellbeing of the person. Click here for the directory of Canadian Naturopaths.
  2. Chiropractic Care and RMT. The Ontario Chiropractic Association speaks to various connections between chiropractic care supporting mental health including the relationship between chronic pain and mental health. The National Library of Medicine speaks to the benefits of massage therapy for psychiatric disorders, and countless research and articles attest to the value of massage therapy supporting overall mental wellbeing.
  3. Engaging in Creativity. It is important for everyone to have creative outlets. This can look different for each individual. Some may be naturally more artistically inclined and enjoying creating music, dancing, painting, writing, or singing. And for others this can be creating things in other forms including creative cooking, writing code, spontaneous play, thinking creatively “outside of the box” and other meaningful ways. In this article Dr. Malchiodi speaks to “creativity increasing positive emotions, lessen depressive symptoms, reduce stress, decrease anxiety, and even improve immune system functioning.”
  4. Therapy. Mental health has been a big area of discussion since the start of the pandemic and most people had an impact on their mental health at some point during the pandemic, throughout the pandemic or possibly continuing today. There is help and effective strategies people can learn to feel empowered to take back control over their life, and live a complete life one that they are happy to get up in the morning.

I have been working with parents for over 10 years. I have learned a great deal from them as well as from parenting my own children. It has taught me that parenting is the most trying job there is, requires the support of a village, and with the right supports can be truly rewarding.
