Feeling Socially Anxious Post Pandemic

11/8/2022

In the past year I have had many people share with me that they have felt socially anxious when they never struggled socially prior to the pandemic. I felt inclined to write about this as some may have been able to overcome this new found challenge as things have been opening up more and more since March. While others may be left not able to shake the social anxiety feeling. You are not alone as many are continuing to struggle with this, know with the right support and plan you can bounce back. Find below some considerations:

  1. Examine Strengths & Areas to Support: Sit down and write about where you feel more stronger or comfortable socially, and what is helping you achieve this. Alternatively write about the situations you are feeling more socially anxious, and list what could be helpful to try. Make sure to include something you find helpful to utilize when anxious like self-talk or breathwork.
  2. Plan for You: From what you developed above create a plan of different steps you can take to get you to where you want to go. Find ways to start small and build up. For example if you want to get more comfortable with small talk, start with short conversation with a neighbour, if that is too much consider starting with saying hello.
  3. Practice the Skills: Many people feel out of practice with their social skills and the article from Healthline speaks to this. It is important to set realistic goals that are achievable so this allows momentum to build. It is important to give yourself grace in this transition period. An article from the  Centre for Treatment of Anxiety and Mood Disorders speaks to allowing yourself time with transition.
  4. Tweak as Needed: If the original plan is not working that you set out for yourself, find ways to adjust it, and keep trying until you have the right fit. It is important to meet yourself with self-compassion, it has been several years of reduced social interaction.
You do not need to struggle with feeling socially anxious on your own. I am Nicole Levy, and I am here as your helping hand, let’s get started, book your complimentary initial consult today https://www.mindfulhealingjourney.ca/#/

I have been working with parents for over 10 years. I have learned a great deal from them as well as from parenting my own children. It has taught me that parenting is the most trying job there is, requires the support of a village, and with the right supports can be truly rewarding.
