Easing the Transition Back to School

​Are you feeling stressed about the new school year starting? Are you worried about your child making friends in their class and liking the teacher? Many parents feel the pressures of the transition to back to school. Below are some considerations to support you through the transition:

  1. Check-in with yourself. See what feelings you are experiencing about your kids heading back to school. If you notice feelings of anxiety or worry, give space for this. And support yourself in what you need to feel more centered and grounded.
  2. Talk about it. Verbally walking through with your kids of what to expect can be helpful. Seeing how they are feeling, and giving space and empathy to their experience. Continuing the conversation each day, this can go something like this “What was your favourite and least favourite part of school today?”
  3. Approach yourself with grace. There is a lot of demands on parents, and a lot of patience that is asked on a daily and minute by minute basis at times. For our kids we only need to be the good enough parent not the perfect parent. Give yourself the support you need to support your child.
  4. Allow space for adjustment. Transitions take time, some more time than others. One child may need a three to six weeks time for an adjustment while your other child may be fine in a couple of days. Each child is different and that is okay, there is a learning curve with all new journeys in life.
