Calming the Overthinking Mind

Overthinking is pervasive, an article by Forbes Health quotes that more than half the population age 25 suffers from chronically overthinking. Research has shown that being in nature can significantly reduce rumination also referred to as overthinking. With the right mindset, supports and presence people are able to overcome overthinking and rewire their minds. Find below some considerations:

  1. Notice. Develop a relationship with yourself of noticing when it is occurring. As you build a stronger ability to notice, you will begin to understand the pattern of how it occurs including what is happening before the overthinking starts. Understanding yourself more is power to change your habit.
  2. Be More Present in the Body. Connecting with the body more tends to naturally calm the mind as it creates balance.
  3. Key of Self-Talk. The way we speak to our self often goes under the radar. It is important that we pay attention to this inner dialogue. When we notice what is going on with our self-talk, we can make choices of how we can support our self or even challenge the overthinking mind. Each time we chose an alternate response to the familiar behaviour we build upon a new neural pathway and as the new one strengthens the old one weakens, often referred to as rewiring our minds.
  4. Be in Nature. Nature allows us an opportunity to be more present in the moment, and usually we are more aware of our body in space. In addition the quiet outside our self can help us to quiet internally.

I have been working with parents for over 10 years. I have learned a great deal from them as well as from parenting my own children. It has taught me that parenting is the most trying job there is, requires the support of a village, and with the right supports can be truly rewarding.
