Boosting Your Child’s Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is key to success in many areas of your child’s life, including their overall happiness and fulfillment in relationships. The Child and Family Blog shares how the pandemic  deprived children of everyday experiences that normally build self-esteem. With the right supports and guidance your can help your child boost their self-esteem. Below are four considerations:
Picture
  1. Give More Space to the Strengths than the Weaknesses. Sometimes as parents we can have a tendency to focus on the things that are not working. I am guilty of that at times as well. However it is important to put the spotlight more on what your child does well. It is still important to coach your child in their area of weakness, but too much focus can start to deteriorate self-esteem.
  2. Positive Outweighs Negative Interactions: Children require 5 positive experiences to every 1 negative experience to have strong connections and to believe they are capable.
  3. Build Your Child’s Area of Interest. If your child has an area of interest find ways to further grow this in collaboration with your child. For example, you can find programs or camps they can learn more about their area of interest, borrow books from your local library, and set aside time with your child for them to share about what they have discovered or learned.
  4. Highlight the Small Achievements. When working towards a larger goal it is important to highlight for your child the “baby steps” they are taking to get where they want to go. When they see they are capable they believe they are capable.

I have been working with parents for over 10 years. I have learned a great deal from them as well as from parenting my own children. It has taught me that parenting is the most trying job there is, requires the support of a village, and with the right supports can be truly rewarding.
