Art Therapy
Art is the tool for communication, self-examination and healing. Art Therapy combines art activities with verbal exploration of the art to facilitate understanding of the client’s issues and concerns. Art therapy facilitates the exploration of experiences and feelings which may be difficult to articulate and understand. Drawing skill or other artistic ability is not necessary in order to participate in Art Therapy. The value of the art produced in therapy lies in what it communicates to the client and not how it looks. As well, the creative act, in itself, can help process issues in a gentle way (OATA, 2021). Art therapy is used with all ages ranges, and can be a particularly helpful approach in working with children as it allows a means of expression that does not rely solely on verbal communication. |
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy occurs when the Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and client enter into a psychotherapeutic relationship where both work together to bring about positive change in the client’s thinking, feeling, behaviour and social functioning. Individuals usually seek psychotherapy when they have thoughts, feelings, moods and behaviours that are adversely affecting their day-to-day lives, relationships and the ability to enjoy life (CRPO, 2021). My therapeutic approach is client-centered and strength based integrating Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) including TF-CBT, Narrative Therapy, Psycho-educational and Mindfulness to best meet the needs of the client. |
Teletherapy/Online Therapy
My practice is solely teletherapy. Teletherapy refers to providing psychotherapy services remotely using telecommunications technologies, such as video conferencing or telephone. I use Doxy and OWL video platforms which have numerous security measures and end to end encryption. One of the benefits of teletherapy is that the client and therapist can engage in services without being in the same physical location. It is also more convenient and takes less time. Teletherapy, however, requires technical competence on both our parts to be helpful. Although there are benefits of teletherapy, there are some differences between in-person psychotherapy and teletherapy, as well as some risks. The risks include potential technology issues and risks to confidentiality. All questions about benefits and risks of teletherapy are explored in the initial session to ensure this type of therapy is suitable for the client.
